What are Scope 1 and 2 emissions?

Each year we calculate our Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions to hold ourselves accountable and provide measurable and comparable feedback on the previous year.

Scope 1 emissions refer to direct greenhouse gas emissions produced by an organisation’s own activities and sources that it controls. for CMC this only includes our vehicle fleet due to the manual nature of our work. For this calculation, we use the Distance Based Method as set out below;

Total Vehicle Mileage (split into vehicle type; lorry, car, truck)  x  Associated emissions factor’s 

             =  Total KGCO2e emitted from Scope 1 activities

Scope 2 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the generation of purchased energy, including electricity and heat used by an organization. As our energy supply is 100% renewable, this figure is 0.

Harnessing the Power of the Sun:

Our commitment to green technology goes beyond our operations. The very foundation of our workspace is built by Solarsense; an award-winning provider of renewable energy solutions.

In a significant leap towards sustainability, we’re thrilled to announce a remarkable 33% increase in solar energy production. Thanks to the installation of a new solar inverter, we’ve generated a whopping 24,983 KWH of solar energy, preventing 5tCO2e from entering the atmosphere. It’s more than just a number; it’s a testament to our commitment to cleaner, greener energy!

Operating on Renewable Energy:

We operate on 100% renewable energy. As well as powering the warehouse, it also supplies energy for our director’s electric vehicle. In the colder months, our biomass boiler provides heat to our radiators and hot water to our taps by using sustainably sourced wood pellets. Around 60% of all mains water is recycled which requires a lot of energy to clean to achieve safe drinking water, our on-site borehole circumnavigates this issue and provides fresh water sources to our unit.

Giving a New Life – Carpet Recycling in Action:

We’re excited to share that through the partnership with our supplier, Marquee Carpets, we’ve fully implemented carpet recycling, so far transforming 2.2 tonnes of used polypropylene carpets into a geotextile membrane to be re-used in the building industry. One tree is also planted per roll of carpet we use. It’s a small step with a big impact, and we’re proud to contribute to a circular economy.

Raising the Bar – Recyclability at 88%:

As stated by our supplier, our core products boast an impressive recyclability rating of 88%. We also invest in equipment to increase the lifespan of our kit, such as our state-of-the-art PVC washing machine from Straight Eight Engineering that can clean roughly 1m of PVC a minute, increasing the lifespan and quality of the kit. Shaping Tomorrow – Future Aims and Aspirations:

As we celebrate our present achievements, our eyes are set on the future. We’re committed to calculating our Scope 3 emissions, exploring the feasibility of an electric vehicle fleet by 2030, and continually investing in equipment to extend the lifespan of our products.
